Tips without the awkward math
Enter the bill, choose a tip percentage and the number of people, and the calculator splits everything: the tip, the total and what each person owes. Ten percent of 68.50 is 6.85, the total is 75.35, and between three people that is 25.12 each.
Round up or down to whatever your group prefers. The calculator gives you exact figures, and you can decide how generous to be with the rounding.
Tip customs vary widely by country. In the United States 15 to 20% is standard for table service; in much of Europe service is included and rounding up is enough; in Japan tipping is not expected at all. The rate is yours to choose.
Splitting the bill, done right
On a 68.50 bill with a 15% tip, the tip is 10.28, the total is 78.78, and across four people that is 19.70 each. Round up to 20.00 each and the group covers the tip plus a little extra, which most servers appreciate.
The calculator shows the exact split for any number of people and any percentage, so the last person to add a dessert does not have to do the arithmetic on the back of a napkin.
Common questions
How much should I tip?
In the US, 15 to 20% for table service is common. Elsewhere, check local custom: many countries include service in the bill and expect nothing or just rounding up.
How do I calculate a tip by hand?
Move the decimal point one place for 10%, then double it for 20%. 10% of 45.00 is 4.50, so 20% is 9.00. The calculator does the rest.
Should the tip be calculated before or after tax?
Many people tip on the pre-tax amount, though some tip on the total. It is your choice; the calculator lets you enter the number you want to apply the percentage to.
What does each person pay when we split?
Divide the total including tip by the number of people. A 75.35 total across three people is 25.12 each, which the calculator shows directly.
